A New Strategy

Expect more attacks against Harold Ford, Jr's family in these last few weeks of the US Senate campaign.

Bob Corker broached the issue in Memphis last weekend, calling the Ford family a "political machine." He renewed his attack last night in Chattanooga, asking Ford to explain how his father, Harold Ford, Sr. was hired as a lobbyist for Fannie Mae within days of Ford, Jr. being appointed to the committee that oversees Fannie Mae.

Ford shrugged off the question, asking Corker to "keep my father out of this." Then said his father had done nothing wrong.

Still, it would appear to be a legitimate question. Was Ford Sr hired because of his son. Did Ford Jr show favoritism toward Fannie Mae because of his father?

But timing is everything, and last night the question seemed to hang in the air and never gained any traction.

In fact, Ford, clearly expecting such an attack, used the opportunity to point the finger back at Corker, suggesting he was deep in the gutter and hadn't hit bottom yet.

Corker's accusation against the Ford familly isn't isolated. Two nights ago at a Republican rally in Williamson County, I'm told a huge banner had been put up that read, "Defeat the Ford Family Machine."

This race is extremely close. Will attacking the Ford family help the Republicans or hurt them?

Ford Jr voted in favor of

Ford Jr voted in favor of strengthening government regulations of Fannie Mae. I know Fannie Mae strongly opposed this. So if Ford Sr is lobbying his son, he is failing miserably. Because Jr voted for the bill that Fannie Mae opposed more than any other bill considered by Congress since 2000.

Corker's people really should do some research before issuing such a baseless attack

it will help them because

it will help them because knoxville is a republican stronghold!! and the rest of tn is for democrats i will vote for ford.

I think it will hurt the

I think it will hurt the Republicans. Corker would have done well to distance himself from Bush and the RNC - to have campaigned as someone dedicated to bringing conservatism back to the party. Instead, the only thing I've learned about Corker from his and the RNC ads...is what he thinks of Harold Ford. My vote will go to Ford.

I will vote for Corker only

I will vote for Corker only because I like Krystal's chili cheese fries.

I do not like this type of campaigning where attacking your opponet is the norm. It completely turns me off. Bob Corker started it in the primary and he is at it again. If he wants to win this race, then tell us what he has to offer instead of flinging insults at his opponets. I could not tell you what any of his platform is, only what he has said about his opponet.

I do not think that Ford is much better, but he seems to be answering the attacks very well. He is flinging words as much, but in defense.

My vote goes to Ford because I like the kind of speaker he is and he seems to be someone who gets things done.

What really puzzles me is why would someone who is a mulitmillionaire developer, and a graduate of Law School want to be a congressman? They could clearly make more money in their chosen profession and all I have seen politics do to candidates is to age them miserably. Have either of them looked at George Bush?? (Or Clinton when he left office)
